According to <CoreMIDI/MIDIServices.h>, -10839 is
kMIDIServerStartErr, which mirrors the log message. This happens, I
think, because you need to be running your daemon in an actual user
log-in session to use CoreMIDI. I don't think that having launchd
launch under a different user sets up the necessary log-in session
related stuff that's necessary to make CoreMIDI happy.

In my ongoing trouble shooting of CoreAudio/CoreMidi in non-console
session processes, it would appear that the "MIDIClientCreate" call
also fails with a non fatal error code of -10839 when called from a
process having a non-console session. I have not looked up the
error code yet, but I do know that the error goes away, along with
the console error message "CoreMIDI: unable to connect to server
init port\n" when run from a normal login session.
