What is the best place to start off learning to code AU plugins? Also, how much coding is necessary to create the most basic plugin, for instance something that takes one sample, perform one operation, like subtract 1 from it and return the value to the host, in terms of lines of code that have to be written?

Using the templates, there is very little programming needed just renaming of view classes etc.: http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/ AudioUnitEffectTemplates/index.html
