Why are AUPublic & CarbonGenericView in "Examples"?

I'm curious to know why the code in /Developer/Examples/CoreAudio/
AudioUnits/AUPublic and .../CarbonGenericView is even in "Examples."
The docs encourage you to use these, and the Xcode templates for
Audio Units use these as well. If it's a real API then shouldn't it
be an actual framework? Basing software on code in "Examples" just
feels shaky.
As an intermediate step, it seems like it should at least be a
library that can be built once and linked into the examples, rather
than being pulled in as individual source files into each project
that uses them.
Also, the only detailed documentation I can find is, well, the code
itself and the couple examples that create custom Carbon views. More
docs would be much appreciated.
