Thanks for all your suggestions. I'm currently working soley on a stand alone version, I'll be turning it into AU. So I'll try some of these suggestion out.

I use AudioUnitHosting in the CoreAudio SDK. To enable instrument
hosting, change this:
#define HOST_EFFECT_UNIT 1
in AudioUnitHosting.cpp to
this:
#define HOST_EFFECT_UNIT 0
and rebuild.
