The QT reference manual for QT 7 is correct - we've not supported
this feature on Mac OS X

Hullo lists,
According to this message in the CoreAudio list archive:

The QuickTime 6 API did now allow MIDI playback to be routed to
external devices--even though the reference manual said it could be
done via the System Preferences.
The QuickTime 7 reference manual still says that "you can set
QuickTime to use an external synthesizer instead of the built-in
one" [1] by selecting the external synth in the System Preferences.
Is the QuickTime manual still incorrect?
Best,
