what is the algorithm for up- or down-sampling?

  • Subject: what is the algorithm for up- or down-sampling?

I am using CA recorded sounds for scientific analysis. It is, therefore, important to know what kind of filtering is done prior to analysis.

When you use an AudioConverter (via an ExtAudioFile) to change sampling rates, how is the stream converted from one rate to another? For down-sampling, is any anti-aliasing filter applied? For up- sampling, what is the approximation method?

Can I assume that if I record at the input device's natural sampling rate, no filtering has been applied (in software).

Thanks,
Dave Fernandes
