timestamp/sample offset

  • Subject: timestamp/sample offset

Hi, I apologize if this is a stupid question, I have searched for answers but not found what I am looking for. If someone could please point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

I am writing AU plugins, and looking for a way that I can determine the current sample position of the block of samples I am processing. Something like AudioTimeStamp.mSampleTime, but relative to the host app's timeline rather than to a hardware device. So if the host is playing back an audio file, I would get the same timestamp each time I was at a particular point in a file. Of course if the host app has no concept of a timeline then this wouldn't make much sense, but that's what I'm going for. Is this even possible?

thanks,
cw
