How to uniquely identify audio device

  • Subject: How to uniquely identify audio device

I have an application that can switch between different audio I/O devices. I would like for the application to be able to select a particular device for input or output on launch. AudioHardwareGetProperty returns, along with the number of I/O channels, the device ID and name. The name and ID, both seem too implementation dependent and I'm likely to get a different ID as devices are removed from/reconnected to the system. So basically my question is: How do I ensure that a device's input (or output), let's call it device 'A input',  is always selected on application on launch?
TIA
