I don't think this long lost feature from the pre-OS X days has made it back into OS X yet, which is too bad.  I'm pretty sure there is discussion about this in the coreaudio-api archives.

Somehow I didn't think about being able to switch the default synth in
QT.  I've looked at the options and can't seem to find a way to do so.
I'll ask on one of the QT lists.  Thanks for the help.
