Jack and CoreAudio (was Mirroring Audio Output)

Jeff:

To the contrary - the CoreAudio team, and you in particular, have been extremely helpful when we (Stephane) have posed questions, and we greatly appreciate it.

I think what Stephane was trying to say though was that in order to get even better integration between Jack and CoreAudio, that an even deeper understanding of CoreAudio internals and AudioMIDI Setup is necessary for us. Stephane and I will try to draft a technical proposal of sorts for your (and Apple's) consideration in the next couple of days.

We are obviously biased, but our sense in the Audio community is that there is a strong desire to have Jack (or Jack-like) functionality embedded at the OS-level; take for example this thread on Create Digital Music: http://createdigitalmusic.com/2006/12/06/vista-audio-improvement-details-for-consumers-at-least/#comments

Just as Apple has used open source foundations in Safari, we feel that a Jack extension to CoreAudio makes a lot of sense...

Stephane or I will post again shortly.

Thanks,
Dan

I'm unclear. Have we been lax in replying to your questions? My apologies if so, and I'm sure we'll try to do better.

I should have added that this doesn't mean that it's impossible. For
example, there are several tools out there that pose as a virtual
device to route the audio back out to user space where a program can
then send it to where ever it likes. The AudioReflectorDriver example
code in our SDK provides a simplistic attempt at this. There are also
more complex tools, like Jack for instance, that do routing and a
bunch of other cool things too.

And if Apple would support the open-source jack project (more specifically the new multi-processor aware jackdmp version http://www.grame.fr/~letz/jackdmp.html), even cooler things could happen! ((-:
