The "Jack at the OS level" discussion re-raises in my mind a
complaint I've had about Logic for a while:
I own Logic Pro, and probably paid almost $2K for it given the long
and expensive upgrade path it's had. However, I feel as though I
don't _own_ it, USB-dongle-thingy nonwithstanding:
Logic has a Ton of very cool synths, effects and the like, which
_should_ be audio units that I could use in another Audio Unit Host
(TM), like Impromptu. (the awesome live-coding environment - thanks
Andrew!).
But no, I have to buy AU soft-synths like Zebra or Absynth or the
like because Logic's aren't audio units (ak!?!).
Why not? I suspect either a) lack of dev-team bandwidth for not
enough return, or b) it's against their business interests.
Whichever case, in somebody's mind it must outweigh the benefit to
customers like me, because they're not doing it.
I'm not fond _at all_ of Logic as an AU Host - it's waay to complex,
and still doesn't feel like an Apple app. Why did I buy it? Well,
because those synths and effects are pretty darn cool, and I kept on
the upgrade train because I assumed (silly me) that they'd become
AU's one day or another.
Oh well, I feel fooled. Apologies if this is the wrong forum to vent.
cheers!
dylan
