Another suggestion would be to use the JUCE audio framework from
www.rawmaterialsoftware.com - it is available under both open source (GPL)
and commercial license.

It isn't an easy process to roll your own AU/VST/RTAS wrappers - I've been
doing it for some years now for our clients and there are many, many gotchas
to trap the unwary.
