I'm assuming the OP meant as a total concept -- of which I know of
now patent covering algorithmic composition as a whole. There are of
course patented methods which may produce algorithmic compositions,
but those are patented just like other methods of sound generation.
You can't really patent a car, but you can patent a new design
for a carburetor. In the course of my research, I've seen all sorts of
patents related to music generation.
Exactly -- related to -- but not as a whole.
The Microsoft patent likely being referred to here (actually, there
are a
few) was issued to Todor Fay of Blue Ribbon Music which was later
purchased
by Microsoft and became part of the "Direct Music" project. I could
find the
exact numbers if I had to.
Well, I think we're actually saying the same thing. There are
patented methods, but not patents over the concept of algorithmic
composition.
