I think its probably too late to do this. We've talked about adding a
custom property to the AU (but that isn't great either) - so we've
essentially punted on the issue at this time as noone seemed to be
too bothered by the current behaviour (AU manu and name is not
localised)

Ok -- so, basically the answer is "No".
Maybe Apple could provide some guidelines for host writers and plugin
vendors to fix this for the future.
I would propose that rather than the old approach (which no one
supports
anyway), that then name strings for AU Components be SPECIFIED to
be encoded
in UTF-8 (no BOM), and that hosts be required to use the UTF-8
encoding when
creating menus, with a fallback to MacRoman if the CFString fails
to be
created when specifing UTF-8 as the source encoding. This would let us
localize plugin names moving forward in a Unicode compatible way....

and you probably don't want to localize the component name since most
AU host apps probably don't even support non-MacRoman names.
i just tried GarageBand 3.0.4, and it can't show Japanese name
properly (garbage text).
CocoaAUHost sample code (or CoreAudio PublicUtility) doesn't support
non-Roman either (hard-coded MacRoman at least the one i have on my
Mac).
btw, AU host is supposed to be using GetApplicationTextEncoding()
instead of hard-coded MacRoman.

Hi Folks,
Near as I can tell, the name of the plugin as presented by hosts is
taken
from the component name defined in the AU resources.
I have determined that if you localize your .r file in Xcode, you
get a
localized name from the Component manager.
So far so good.
The question is -- if I want to localize the name to not be Mac
Roman, how
do I do it? I tried UTF-8 in the .r file but that did not appear to
work, I
got garbage characters.
What encoding is the AU name expected in. How does one make an AU
with a
name written in, say, Japanese characters. I was hoping I would
just define
the name using a UTF-8 string and all would work, but alas, this
does not
seem to be the case; I have determined that my Japanese resources
are being
loaded, but the encoding is wrong.
Thanks in advance for any insight...
