Exclusive application access to audio device

I am looking to adapt AudioReflectorDriver so that the input device (i.e. the stream which provides audio to applications rather than the one which receives audio from applications) is not published as a device which applications (other than mine) can attach to.
I want my app to receive audio direct from the driver and so far have investigated audio device plugins and direct (bespoke) communication with AudioReflectorDriver.
It looks like the audio device plugin mechanism exists only for overriding device properties, and enhancing the device driver interface appears hard and probably undesirable (if a mechanism exists already).
I am wondering if there is already a way to read audio from a device driver without it actually appearing in the system as a device for audio to be read from. Maybe it is possible to make the device hidden but still accessible if you know how, e.g. in the way as Macs can connect to an Airport station which is not broadcasting its SSID, because the SSID has been entered manually in the Mac to enable the rendezvous.
