Help with monitoring system-wide audio

I'm trying to create a Cocoa application which can monitor audio
output level system-wide. I just need to display a basic audio level
meter, but it has to respond to anything being sent to the default
audio device from any application. The monitoring application itself
won't be generating or processing audio, just displaying the level.
Is there any way to query the audio system to get the necessary
information? I've been studying documentation and searching list
archives, but I'm not finding anything that seems relevant, or maybe
I'm just not "getting it". I'm a newbie as far as the audio APIs go,
I've done a fair amount of Cocoa development but this is my first
attempt at anything audio-related (beyond just telling NSSound or
QuickTime to play an audio file).
Any suggestions, pointers to relevant docs, etc., greatly appreciated!
