iTunes interface

I think this is a little off topic but I hope you'll bear with me... I'm working on a project that downloads mp3s and video files. I'm looking for suggestions for moving the media files to an iPod (and other mp3 players connected to a Mac). My first thought was that I could make an applescript to move a file to the iTunes Library and then from the Library to an iPod. I haven't had any luck finding scripts that do either of these operations.

What I would prefer is a way to take a given file and put it right on the iPod with some Cocoa or Carbon code.

Can anyone offer a suggestion for doing this ?
