Is a plugin enough for a render effect?

Hi All,

I have a USB audio device that needs to have a render/output effect applied post-mix from a 3rd party library and I am trying to find out if an Audio Plug-in will get the job done or if I have to implement a full-blown driver....
In XP this is done with a filter driver, but it is unclear to me if the plug-in is equivalent.
If anyone knows or can point me to definitive documentation it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Ernie
