Having AudioConverter recognise custom AudioCodec components

I'm trying to adapt the IMA4 AudioCodecSDK example component to add my own codec for use by AudioConvertor. I followed the readme and placed the built component in /Library/Components, with the resource information changed to have the codec accessed using 'thng' information from 'ima4' even though the rest of the sample code was unchanged. However AudioConverter will not recognise it even though the "Feindishthngs" tool lists the component perfectly.
I saw a post on this list from 2003 where a similar question was asked and the response was that there would be a presentation on how to do this at the then WWDC. No further information exists that I can find.
Some guidance and details on how to do this would be much appreciated, the AudioCodecSDK sample code clearly expects it to be possible...
