I'm investigating a workaround in which I try to do the Apple-
prescribed initialization, but also set a special value that
probably wouldn't be there if there's garbage data, and check every
control update to see if that value is what I gave it in
initialization. If it's not, I know the host failed to start the
plugin correctly and I'd blank all data there.
Quick followup- I did this and the Logic 8 user reports the bug
fixed. I haven't heard back from the Digital Performer users, except
a report that they had a workaround- they had to bounce stuff
starting from before the start of the audio file my plug was on, and
then it was OK.
Hopefully this really was it- if I have any positive reports from
the DP users I'm sold and will consider that an obligatory part of
any plugin. I'm interested in why this isn't happening to plugins
that bring their own GUI- and very interested in why multiple hosts
are forgetting to call kernel::reset().
Is anyone else having init issues with hosts? This is also a heads-
up to the Logic guys and anyone else intending to make plugs for
Logic 8- I don't know if this happens to the normal plugin vendors
(not using very stripped-down generic interface) but if it does you
want to know about it. Garbage data in IIR filters, memory blocks etc
causes VERY LOUD blasts of noise, and users get really freaked out.
They always blame the plugin because it appears to be coming from the
plugin (in fact it is!) and they don't always tell you, the
developer. I've had some guys later tell me they stopped using the
product without saying a word to me about it...
