Recommended approach for iPhone audio?

Hi all,

Are there any recommendations out there about which of the various CoreAudio approaches one should use for an iPhone app that does some simple multitrack recording/playback? Just the usual deal with recording a new track while playing previously-recorded tracks (possibly with effects). I have seen CA examples that use AudioUnits, some that use the AudioQueue API, some that use HAL, others that do not. I realize that different apps may have different needs, but are there any rules of thumb about which approach I should take? I certainly love the idea of using audio units for doing mixing, effects and so forth (coding up a simple mixer with the audio graph APIs) but I'm still a bit confused about the recording examples (something about using the output device as input?) and the audio queue examples seem much more straightforward. Can someone set me straight? Thanks much...
