If you have no preference at all between the two options above, then it comes down to whether you'll find it harder to write an application which deals with a variety of audio sources, or learning the AudioUnit API (hosting, UI, etc.). Many programmers, even some seasoned individuals, find AudioUnits difficult to learn. If all of this is new to you, then you might enjoy quicker success with an integrated Cocoa application. My apologies if you're not a beginner, I'm merely making that assumption based on the typical questions that come through this list, and the brevity of your question.

No worries! I'm a seasoned Mac developer (even worked at Apple for 4 years). I'm newer to Cocoa, and very new to Core Audio. Core Audio seemed like a given, because I didn't want to deal with the myriad APIs for getting at audio data. I just wanted to make sure I understood the role of AUs well enough to know if I should pursue learning how to make such a display with them.

It's part of a bigger app to process PSK-encoded digital data.

Thanks! I think I'll take my chances with the AU.
