The only exception i'm aware of is the Mac Pro. It has 3 distinct audio output devices that can be addressed separately (Line Out, Optical Out, Headphone/Speaker).

Rogue Ameoba's SoundSource will toggle between the line out and headphone/speaker based on the 'jack' property of one or the other.

On most of our hardware, the headphones and the speaker are driven from the same device and are mutually exclusive.
