HOWEVER, why do you want to set the SYSTEM VOLUME programatically?

Why?

The only application I have come across that does this is Real Media TM Player Center Pro Magic Edition (or whatever it's called) on Windows and it's a really obnoxious thing to do.

I agree. Applications should set their own volume, *not* the system volume.
