I see this allot (especially in 10.5.3 and 10.5.4). We can make this happen quickly by making a call to MacGetCurrentProcess (see Process.h), early in the boot phase. Our software codec makes this call to figure out what process is trying to use it. Even if I remove the SW codec eventually I'll find this daemon dead. I've seen posts on the web that I'm not the only one who has come across this.

Even when the daemon is dead audio works, but we have noticed that Final Cut's delivery of audio/video becomes a bit inconsistent and AV sync is impossible to achieve. We believe that the first frame of video and the first audio samples sometimes get out of sync by as much as 8 milli seconds.

Can I get source code for the coreaudiod to debug it? Can anyone shed light on this problem.

Regards
-Phil
