I agree with Mike.
As an aside I think if at least the Audio and MIDI were separated it
would be possible to select the correct side of the application simply
by launching it. Today I launch it and hope to get the correct side
after launch. Or is there a way to select the Audio or MIDI side
programatically today?

Yet another example that shows it has improper name and
place: my ex-coworker who dealt with Core Audio much more
than me didn't know about this utility either. In fact he
recommended me HALLab when I asked how to query/change
sample rate. He was surprised to know about "Audio MIDI
Setup". Consider this as a negative result from a quick
"hall way" testing. I woldn't be surprised if majority
of users (among those who know what sample rate is and
who ever wondered how to query/change it) do not know
about Audio MIDI Setup either.
