Jeff, this confirms what I was suspecting, thanks.  There are plenty of devices out there that are Firewire sound cards with word clock synchronization. Unfortunately they are typically $500 or more and come with many inputs and outputs. We have 14 machines and a need for only 2 outputs on each.  If we were not so far into the project I would consider getting a board made. Anyway, it is in the hands of the PM now... We are considering alternative solutions, such as measuring the difference between the actual and ideal sample rates over time and resampling the sound on the fly.
