Hey Bob,

you cannot expect "any" cheapo 5.1 card to work in a Mac. There are serious issues with the Creative Labs SoundBlaster cards which are the most common kit on the market.

A lot of them are very dependent on the drivers to really work properly, and those are simply not stable.

That's just my opinion, others may have other opinions, but I would personally not want to get into this particular rabbit hole!

Hi everyone and thanks for the comments so far.

The project I'm considering needs a device that Audio Midi Setup recognises as a true multi channel output device. This means that optical/SPDIF/Dolby digital won't work. The sound quality does not need to be any better than 44.1 kHz 16 bits per channel and I only need audio output - no Midi or audio input

So far, it looks like Mac support for high end audio interfaces is no problem, but such devices cost several hundred dollars.

Unfortunately, for the project I'm considering, many of the potential users will only be able to afford lower priced interfaces (say up to $150) so unless there's a reasonable prospect of a range of these being available there's no point even starting it. No doubt there will be some users who are happy to pay more but there won't be enough of these users to make the project viable.

The real issue, and the crunch for the project, is whether it's possible to go and buy any cheapo PCI/USB/FireWire 5.1 card and expect a Mac to be able to drive it. So far, I can't come up with any definitive answers on this.

Best

Bob
