Keep in mind that even the latest DJ mixers offer three different curves for the crossfade, as does Logic. For crossfaders, it's more what happens at the 'top' rather than the 'bottom' that really makes a difference. That's because in the center of a crossfader, you're getting two MP3s at 'full' volume. That makes the middle of the crossfade louder than the rest. Some cut by 6 dB in the middle, which works well if you have the same track on both sides, maybe with different processing on each. Others cut by 3 dB in the middle, which is a little more realistic considering that the audio on either side of the crossfader is not going to be lining up perfectly. I think there are even some other values for the dip in the middle, depending upon how much of a boost is seen in the real world, and what tames that best.


I'm no DJ, but I think they also offer linear and log taper as you move away from the center. i.e. Crossfaders are even more fun than regular faders or stepped attenuators.
