MIDI-controller plugin basic

Hi, I want to program a AU to control an external synthesizer via MIDI. I started reading the Audio Unit Programming Guide, and planned to go through the Core Audio Overview, but I suppose I will only need a very small fraction of it. Is there anyone who could tell me which parts are really needed for controlling MIDI?
