HAL or driver

I want to create a plugin or driver that allows a standard application such as itunes to specify a 5.1 surround sound output when the actual hardware output is stereo. The software will take 5.1 audio and process it to create stereo audio with 5.1 imaging when listened to over headphones. The application should work independently of the hardware providing it has a stereo output.
