The subject says it all. I keep getting ExtAudioFileWrite FAILED! -50 '\377\377\377\316' on async writes from a render callback. I don't see -50 as an error code in the header files. Does anyone know what this means?

Look in MacErrors.h, the core set of Carbon error codes. -50 is paramErr, which basically means something passed an invalid parameter to a function.
