Ethan is referring to HAL AudioDevices that expose AudioControls on
the scope, kAudioDevicePropertyScopePlayThrough. Many of these
controls can also be accessed via the Device's input scope
(kAudioDevicePropertyScopeInput) through properties such as
kAudioDevicePropertyPlayThru,
kAudioDevicePropertyPlayThruVolumeScalar, etc.
