Example of minimal CoreMidi code to play MIDI through the built in synth?

Hello,
I'm interested in trying to make a basic MIDI player program that can
play notes directly using the built in DLSSynth.

I want to do this in C/C++ (as opposed to Objective C, or whatever
other options there might be). I took a look at the "audio instrument
project" in XCode, but it's way over my head.

I figure this must be real easy for someone familiar with the API. Can
anyone share some C code that demonstrates the simplest way to
initialize the built-in synth and play some notes?

Thanks in advance,
Adam
