Why No MIDI on iPhone?

OK, now that the iPhone NDA has been lifted I have to ask the obvious - why no MIDI on iPhone and Touch? It seems a shame that the most basic phone can play SP-MIDI at least, yet the iPhone can't. Is it to do with it all (ie DLS synth) having to be done in software rather than hardware?
