MIDI channels in music device AUs

Hello,

I am wondering how audio unit host applications can determine the number of MIDI channels supported by music device audio units. I have read these messages in some detail:

http://lists.apple.com/archives/coreaudio-api/2003/Jul/msg00393.html
http://lists.apple.com/archives/coreaudio-api/2003/Jul/msg00400.html

I have tried using kAudioUnitProperty_ElementCount on the Group scope(element 0) and it gives me "0" when querying AUs that I know support at least 16 channels. There are host apps out there that provide the user with a number of output channels corresponding to the number of MIDI channels available on the AU, so I assume there is some way to determine this.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.

James
