AU inserts at device level

  • Subject: AU inserts at device level

Hi everyone,

I'm having issues with voiceover recording using an external FireWire preamp and D/A (ProFire 610). As the interface doesn't feature any form of pre-A/D dynamics processing, the average audio level that gets into the connected software is rather low. The software doesn't support AU plug-ins, so I can't insert a compressor/limiter AU into the signal chain as I would do with Logic or any other DAW. Basically this is more of a "broadcast" situation, rather than a recording session.

Does anyone know of a way to insert one or more AUs at the device level? I mean, a piece of software that connects to the audio interface, does the dynamics processing and then mimics an AU device itself, which other software can connect to?

If I don't miss anything important, the question probably boils down to "can a user-level software provide an AU device" (in the way it can provide MIDI endpoints)?

Any pointer is appreciated.

Andre
