Hi Bill

I must be looking in the wrong place. I can not find much documentation about ALAC

Apple Lossless Audio Codec

- Can I use ALAC to compress PCM on iPhones?

yes

- What will the file extension be?

its a data format, not a file format. ALAC can be put into m4a files (you can rip to ALAC in iTunes), or CAF files. You can create either of these file formats on the phone and put ALAC data in them

- can most iPod devices and windows computers play this format? Do they need quick time?

yes - except for shuffles I think. Windows would need quicktime and they can only be played back with iTunes, QT Player or other apps that use QT.

Bill

- The mFormatId field of the AudioStreamBasicDescription defines kAudioFormatAppleLossless. What is the equivalent value to use in inFileType argument in ExtAudioFileCreateWithURL() ?

Thanks

Andy
