Thanks for confirming this can be done. However, I'm still a bit stumped on how to do it. Is there any information available? Especially if there is additional "house keeping" required. (All the example I've looked at seem to use graphs.)

It's pretty simple to use AU's without a graph.
The extra features provided by the graph include being able to
initialize/uninitialize all of the AU's in the graph at once, and
perform dynamic connections/disconnections in a threadsafe manner.
