It's been a while since I've been working on sidechain things, but I think if I remember correctly the code I posted does check for a connection, but that there are some inconsistencies between hosts how they handle connected vs. unconnected. If I remember correctly, I think I found one host that always creates the connection (on the AU level), but sends silence when there actually is not any audio connection made (on the user level). In that sort of case, I'm not sure what you can do except maybe communicate with the host developers about it?
