help starting out with Core Audio / MIDI

Hi All,

I'm a long time programmer and musician, but completely new to Core Audio. I am trying to scope out the work for a potential project that involves creating a software MIDI controller. In short, I want to have a simple desktop Cocoa application that will be seen as a MIDI controller by any DAW (GarageBand, Logic, etc.). I would think this involve somehow registering as a "device" and then sending MIDI events, but I have absolutely no idea where to even start.

I have looked through the ADC, but haven't found anything useful. Can any of you kind souls point me to a good place to start? Perhaps give a high-level rundown of Core Audio/MIDI specific tasks I'd have to accomplish to make the above scenario a reality?

Thanks a ton,
Nick
