iPhone input/output sampling rates

Hey CoreAudio folks --

I searched the archives and saw a dangling question about this but couldn't find an answer:

Is it possible to set up an iPhone/iPod with different input and output sampling rates? E.g. read the iPhone mic at the 8K [mono] and (after appropriate conversion) play back at 44.1k [stereo].
