This doesn't directly answer your question, but according to QA1631
(in the iPhone OS 2.2 Library), you're doing things the wrong way
round:
> Follow these simple guidelines:
> Get or Set "Preferred" properties when the audio session is not active.
> Get "Current" properties once the audio session has been activated.
