I presume you've taken a look at the scaudiocompress sample code?
No, I had never heard of it; I haven't looked at QuickTime APIs in
several years.

OK, I'm trying out the compression-settings dialog, but it's got
some odd issues:
- I can change output formats via the pop-up, but for some reason it
beeps whenever I do it.
- With AAC selected, the Render Settings pane only shows a single
Quality pop-up.
Both of these go away if I change the Channels setting to Mono. Then
it stops beeping, and with AAC selected adds the 'MPEG 4 AAC LC
Encoder Settings' with a Target Bit-Rate pop-up, and enables the
Advanced Settings pop-up.
Beeping is bad. What kind of input file did you point it at (your -i /
path/to/file)?

To be honest, I think this dialog is kind of overkill for what I
need (I'm writing a consumer app, and I don't want to scare people
away). But playing with it has given me some ideas of what to make
my UI look like, so thanks for pointing me at this sample!
