I've never used anything but 16-bit audio on the Mac! (I don't have any I/O hardware that supports 24-bit.)

If you're getting errors, there must be some other problem with how you've configured the AudioConverter or AudioQueue. What exact format do you need, and exactly are you filling in for the AudioStreamBasicDescription?
