Generate pitches in iPhone app?

I'm a relative newbie to Core Audio though I have read through
documentation and have used it in a Mac OS X application.
My question is whether I can do something similar in an iPhone app
that I did in my OS X app. In the OS X app, I used MIDI to have the
application play notes (using MusicDeviceMIDIEvent). I realize that
MIDI is not supported on iPhone so I'm wondering if there is a way to
have pitches generated by my app without using MIDI. It appears to me
that I have to have some sort of sound files that contain the pitches
that I need. This may be an obvious question if the only way to
generate pitches from an application is by using MIDI.
The reason that I would like to do it this way is because it was very
easy to vary the length that that pitch is played. If I had separate
sound files for each pitch I'm not sure how I would vary the length of
the pitch. Would I have to have separate sound files for each?
If anyone have any information regarding this and can point me in the
right direction, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken Bowlus
