ExtAudioFileRead and AudioBufferList, should I use something else?

I´m trying to use ExtAudioFileRead but the reference pages refers to the buffer as a AudioBufferList type. When I look this up the documentation says that the information is obsolete and should not be used for new development, however no hints is given to what should be used instead.
