Are you setting the complexity before you initialize the audio unit?
Setting it after initialized will have no effect.
Sorry, that seems to be backwards. It looks like you have to set it after initialization.

In my experience setting quality works either way, both before and after initialization, and I believe setting complexity should behave the same.

it would on SL

OK I'm going to have to amend myself twice on this.
You are correct, it doesn't work on Leopard. It has been fixed in the interim, which was what I was looking at.

Great. Any reason why AUVariseed can't be changed to support complexity as well?

We don't see any good reason to provide mastering quality for the varispeed and linear would not be good for this either.

A side question: AUVariseed supports only float formats
and this is by design, correct?

Yes

A side observation: I noticed that I could mimic behavior of
AUVarispeed variable playback rate by using AUConverter and
updating it's source/destination format's rate (the property
that updates formats is not read-only with AUConverter). This
leads to a question why to have AUVarispeed at all?

for dynamic control of the playback rate. Seriously, if you are wanting to do a basic sample rate conversion you should use AUConverter
