also, the cases aren't exactly equivalent
In the first case you have 8 stereo inputs, in the second case you
have 8 mono inputs. So, the first case is dealing with 2X as much
input data than the second. Just on those grounds you would expect the
first case to be more expensive than the second at some point in the
chain
