That is why you have distortion. Your buffer should be float for best results.



That's only true if the data is actually moved into and out of it as char values (i.e., one char = one sample value). However, it looks like he was treating it as if it were a buffer of floats, reading and writing floats into what is simply defined somewhere as an array of char.
